SUSA: Bush at 38%

The SUSA Bush approval ratings for August are in, and he's at 38% approval, despite his much touted noninvolvement in foiling the latest terrorism plot.

As usual, Utah and Idaho still give him high marks. Wyoming and Oklahoma give him lower net positives, and the other 46 states, including all 11 Confederate States, give him net disapproval.  As usual, the Northeast, together with Illinois and Michigan, give Bush his worst numbers.

More analysis below the fold.

Also as usual, Hawaii is the most Bush-favored Kerry state, and Ohio the most anti-Bush Bush state (assuming Bush did indeed get the most Ohio votes).  Most states are within five points of where they were this time last month, with a few notable exceptions to chew on.

MAINE is back up to fourth most anti-Bush state at -39%, after dropping to 17th place at -27% last month.  Meanwhile, Bush's legislative partner, Olympia Snowe, was at 70% approval last month, with new numbers not yet released.  Roughly 40% of Maine voters disapprove of Bush but will vote to enable his agenda in Congress.  I'm still puzzled and frustrated. ME-Sen by rights should be a top tier race.

OREGON popped up from 27th place at -21% all the way to 11th place at -31%, a ten percent jump in disapproval.  Go Oregon! The most contested races here are local ones like the State Legislature, so it's hard to see whether Bush disapproval will play into Democratic gains here.

MASSACHUSETTS dropped slightly, from -44% to -31%, for no apparent reason.  It's still highly Democratic favored, for Governor and all Democratic incumbents.

ARKANSAS, still the bluest Southern state, went from -23% net approval to -28%, leapfrogging over several more Democratic states to the north, like Iowa and Wisconsin.

NEVADA, an important state with two competitive House races, an open Governorship and a second tier Senate race, went from -22% net approval to -27%.  I say it's time to put Senator Nonsense's feet to the fire with his 100% Bush voting record.  In a state where 63% of the people don't like Bush, it's hard to see why an extreme Bush enabler deserves re-election.

CALIFORNIA went from -37% net approval to -26%, an eleven point boost for the President, at the same time as Gropenfuhrer rebounded and made the Governor's race competitive again.  California now ranks significantly lower than both Oregon and Washington in Bush disapproval. What's up with that?

Even worse, PENNSYLVNIA, with four or more top tier House races and our safest Senate pickup, went from -33% to -19% in one month.  Still not exactly pro-Bush, but PA is now the only Northeastern state other than West Virginia to have net Bush approval higher than -30%.  Did Pennsyltucky drink the terrorism kool-aid?

SOUTH DAKOTA, with -16% net approval last month, jumped to -23%.  I credit the disastrous no abortions of any kind bill backlash.

KANSAS too, increased its Bush disapproval. Old net approval -7%. New net approval -19%.  Nebraska and North Dakota continue to sour on Bush too, by much lesser degrees.  Let's hope this is a harbringer of a Democratic Renaissance in the plains.

NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA went up.  SC went from -12% net approval to -20%, while NC went from -1% to -14%.

MONTANA went from -4% one month ago to -11%.  ALASKA went from -3% to -13%.  Good job in supposedly red states.

OKLAHOMA went from -13% to +4% to become the only state other than the usual "little three" Rocky Mountain states to actually give Bush a positive rating.  Probably the July poll was an outlier anyhow.
